AMBIENT Monitroing in Dementia

ambient failed to display

Falls are the leading cause of injuries in older adults. Dementia exacerabtes control of gait and balance, significantly increasing the risk of falls. In this project I built an AMBIENT system (Ambient Mobility, Balance, and Gait Evaluation and Monitoring Technologies) to monitor the motion of dementa patients non-obtrusively. From the motion footage, Gait and balance parameters were extracted to build classifiers in order to predict imminent falls. The system is currently deployed in the dementia unit of Toronto Rehab Institute. RFID was used to detect the presence of research participants and Microsoft Kinect was used to track their motion.
